UK work permits and sponsored work visas

The term “UK work permit” is commonly used to describe permission to work under one of the UK's sponsored work routes. In most cases, the applicant needs an eligible job offer from an employer that holds the correct sponsor licence and is willing to assign a Certificate of Sponsorship.

The Skilled Worker route is the principal sponsored work route for long-term employment. Other routes may be appropriate for intra-group assignments, overseas businesses expanding into the UK, graduate trainees, scale-up workers and certain temporary roles.

What must be checked?

• Sponsor licence: the employer must be licensed for the correct immigration route.
• Genuine vacancy: the role must be genuine and must not have been created mainly to secure immigration permission.
• Occupation code: the duties must match an eligible occupation code.
• Salary: the pay must meet the applicable threshold and going rate.
• Certificate of Sponsorship: the CoS must contain accurate information about the role and worker.
• Applicant requirements: the worker must meet all relevant immigration, English-language and financial requirements.
