Detailed information about our Unmarried Visa service

The UK Fiancé Visa allows non-British nationals who are engaged to British citizens or individuals with settled status to enter the UK in order to get married or enter a civil partnership within six months of arrival.

Unlike the Marriage Visitor Visa, which is intended for couples who plan to marry in the UK and then leave, the Fiancé Visa is designed for those who wish to live and settle in the UK after marriage.

Fiancé Visa holders can remain in the UK after their wedding and apply to switch to a Spouse Visa without needing to leave the country. The Fiancé Visa is part of the UK Family Visa category and is initially granted for six months.

Once married, you can apply to switch to the Spouse Visa, which is granted for 30 months. After completing five years on the Spouse Visa route, you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and eventually British citizenship.

Key Requirements

To qualify for the Fiancé visa, applicants must meet several criteria, including:

  • Genuine and subsisting relationship: You and your partner must be in a real, committed relationship. This is a subjective assessment, and can be challenging to prove—especially if you're from a culture where pre-marital contact is limited. Our team at Westkin can help you present strong, credible evidence to meet this requirement.
  • Intention to marry: You must have a clear, genuine intention to get married or form a civil partnership in the UK within six months of arrival. Evidence may include wedding venue enquiries, communication between you and your partner, and plans related to your ceremony.
  • Financial requirement: The UK-based partner (sponsor) must meet a minimum income threshold of £29,000.
  • Accommodation: The couple must demonstrate they have suitable housing in the UK.
  • English language proficiency: The applicant must prove they can speak and understand English, usually by passing an approved test or holding an exempt qualification.
  • Immigration status of the sponsor: The UK partner must be a British citizen, have settled/Pre-settled status, or hold refugee status or humanitarian protection.
  • Location – You must be outside the UK when submitting your Fiancé Visa application. This visa cannot be applied for from within the UK..
