How has Roman Abramovich obtained Israeli citizenship

As any Israeli immigration lawyer will be able to describe describe, the process by which individuals can obtain Israeli nationality is relatively straightforward if they are Jewish.

The law of return as it is known is a cornerstone of the founding of the state of his rail. As part of its remit to provide a place of sanctuary as a Jewish homeland, Israeli law allows for anyone who can prove themselves to be Jewish to be issued A passport without delay.

It is this process that has allowed Mr Abramovich  to obtain an Israeli passport with such speed.

Can Roman Abramovich Come back to the UK?

As discussed in our last post, Mr Abramovich is unable to renew his investor Visa for at least one year, as a result of the immigration law that prevents those people who leave the UK before their Visa is renewed from obtaining an immediate extension all from starting the Visa again.

This being the case, Abramovich would not of been able to enter the UK on his Russian passport without having a Visa.

The effect on his various Business holdings, including Chelsea FC, no doubt would’ve been profound.

However by obtaining an Israeli passport, Mr Abramovich is now permitted to enter the UK as a tourist without first obtaining a Visa.

As leading immigration solicitors advise, The UK allows nationals of certain countries to fly to UK without first having obtained a Visa for tourist and visiting purposes. This country is known as non-Visa nationals can simply arrive at the airport and can enter, usually after a number of brief questions why emigration officials at the point of entry.

This does however raise a further difficulty, Mr Abramovich’s immigration lawyers will have advised him that an individual can only enter the UK as a tourist for a maximum of 180 days, around six months, and during that period he cannot work. Mr Abramovich will however be able to undertake very limited business activities whilst here.

Under UK Visa law, it seems that his immigration lawyers have found a basic compromise. Abramovich will to apply for a new investor Visa after year, he will only be kept out of the UK for six months at a maximum until that point, and will be able to coordinate his business activities, albeit in a limited sense, during that period.

It is hard to know what Abramovich’s immigration advice actually is , or what his intentions are. But it seems in obtaining Israeli citizenship, he has kicked the problems down the road to the future.
